OUR VERDICT

Victory is an honest, characterful wooden junk that gets you Halong's greatest hits - Sung Sot Cave, Titop Island and Luon Cave - for about $114 a head, which is exactly where its appeal lies. Don't come expecting luxury: cabins are a snug 16-18m2 with ocean-view windows but no balcony or bathtub, there is no lift across its four decks of stairs, and the 2-day route sticks to the busy main channel. The 3-day extension into quieter Lan Ha Bay is the one to book if you want fewer crowds and more time in the water. Worth noting the pricing here is indicative rather than a confirmed operator rate.

Q
Is a wooden junk comfortable, or is it old and basic?

Victory is a traditional wooden junk with 4-star onboard service. Cabins are compact (16-18m²) but have A/C, en-suite bathrooms and ocean-view windows, plus a sundeck, cooking demo and sunset party. It's cozy and characterful rather than luxurious, which is why it's priced from about $114pp

Q
What's the difference between the 2-day and 3-day trip?

The 2D1N covers the iconic core - Sung Sot Cave, Titop Island and Luon Cave. The 3D2N adds a quieter day in Lan Ha Bay with Trinh Nu Cave, a pearl farm and a swim at Ba Trai Dao Beach, so it's the pick if you want fewer crowds and more water time
