It runs the quieter Bai Tu Long route - Thien Canh Son Cave and Vung Vieng fishing village - away from the busy core of Halong Bay.

La Regina Classic is a modest but honest pick: a 2023-built wooden junk of 22 cabins on the quiet Bai Tu Long route, where Thien Canh Son Cave and Vung Vieng fishing village stay refreshingly uncrowded. It is a true 3-star, though, so temper expectations - base Deluxe cabins are a snug 15m2, only the two Terrace Suites get a private terrace, there is no spa, pool or lift across its four stair-linked decks, and every cabin sleeps just two. Priced from about $110 a guest with kayaking, a cave trek and four meals included, it is arguably the best-value overnight in Bai Tu Long, as long as you are happy with rustic over refined.

- Bai Tu Long Bay is calmer and less crowded than the Halong core, but kayaking, swimming and the Thien Canh Son Cave trek are weather-dependent. Winter (Dec-Feb) is cool and misty; summer storms can shorten or reschedule sailings.
